March 2021

Dear Members:

March is the season of blooming flowers, bringing warmth and sunshine to our lives. I appreciate everyone’s participation and support of our Chapter and deeply appreciate our Board members, who are very busy working on our programs, reports to head office, financial reports, newsletters, and website and Facebook maintenance!

Our Treasurer, Fukuyo Tanaka, would like to convey the following:

Become a Board member

I hope everyone is doing as well as they can be during this time of the Corona pandemic. I have missed each and every one of you and cannot wait until we can gather again. This period apart has provided a lot of time to reflect on what

is important in each of our lives. I'm positive Ikebana has been a key part of your life’s practice, as it has been in mine for over 28 years.

Today I call upon those of you who have wanted to participate in a leadership role in our Chapter, have ideas on what this organization could be doing better, and have time to devote to Chapter business, to please apply to be a Vice President of our Board. Perhaps you know of a Chapter member who you think might be a good fit. If so, please submit his/her name into the running as well.

We welcome candidates who support the mission of our Ikebana International Los Angeles Chapter - to stimulate, cultivate and perpetuate the study of Ikebana, related arts and culture.

Open Positions

The incoming Board (July 2021 - June 2023) has two open positions to fill:

First Vice President (Programs): Have you enjoyed all the zoom presentations this year? These were set up by our current Vice President, Katey Ho. It looks like we'll continue virtual meetings for the next year. The First Vice President coordinates these presentations with our National Chapter. In the absence of the President, the First Vice President will take on the role of Chapter President.

Third Vice President (Publicity): The Third Vice President transmits our Chapter activities each month to the Ikebana International National Chapter, is the liaison with other Ikebana Chapters, and maintains our Facebook account once a month.

Benefits of Joining the Board

Some of the benefits of joining our Chapter’s Board are:

  • Connect with many students and teachers from the 5 schools of Ikebana

  • Help organize, plan and improve the annual Katen exhibition and workshops

  • Practice and improve your community organizing and group communication skills

  • Promote your Ikebana School at Ikebana International events and help attract potential new students

  • Surround yourself with like-minded people who love Ikebana as much as you

The end of our Chapter’s fiscal year is fast approaching. It will be a burden on the other members of our Board if these two Board positions are left vacant. We are relying on your cooperation and friendship to fill these positions. Please contact Cynthia Conant, our Nominating Committee Chair, at (conant@usc.edu), or me at (hanaarare@gmail.com; telephone 562.481.1652) for more information or to submit your name.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Fukuyo Tanaka

Treasurer,

Ikebana International Los Angeles Chapter #4

March 2021 Meeting

During our March zoom meeting, we watched a video demonstration by Satsuki Palter. Satsuki is the President of the L.A. Ohara Chapter and Sub-Grand Master of Ohara School. She joined the Zoom meeting for a Question and Answer session after the video. In the video, she created four beautiful signature Ohara style arrangements. Please enjoy the photos below.

Upcoming April 2021 Meeting

For next month’s Zoom program, we will view a Sogetsu Ikebana video demonstration by Susan Cano, a Riji of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. Read about the full program HERE.

We invite Sogetsu members to create one arrangement per participant to share during the April Zoom meeting after we view Susan’s video. We look forward to seeing your designs!
