January 2022

Dear Members:

Happy New Year everyone. To honor the year of the Tiger, several of our members participated in the Oshogatsu Celebrations in Little Tokyo at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center’s 5th annual Cultural Ikebana exhibition. The arrangements by teachers from Ikenobo, Ohara and Sogetsu Ikebana schools were featured. Here are some photos I took. Please enjoy larger version of these photos and more works by our members below.

Annual Luncheon Cancelled

The Board has been closely monitoring the situation with COVID-19.  After much consideration, and out of concern for the health and safety of our members and guests, the Board has made the tough decision to cancel our Chapter’s 2022 New Year Luncheon. We know that this is a disappointment to all, however we need to prioritize the health and safety of our members and guests. We have emailed all guests with details regarding your registration payment.

Please don’t forget to notify your invited guest(s) about the Luncheon cancellation. We look forward to seeing all of you at next month’s Katen.

I.I. Headquarters New Year Gathering Recap

What did you think of the online "New Year Gathering 2022" hosted by I.I. Headquarters which was announced in last month's newsletter with final details emailed on January 17th? I'm again hopeful that as many people as possible were able to see it within the 48-hour timeframe. I really enjoyed the demonstration by Mr. Akane Teshigahara, the current Sogetsu Iemoto. I would like to thank I.I. Headquarters for giving us such an opportunity.

April Workshop

The February workshop scheduled for Sunday, February 20, 2022 will be postponed to Sunday, April 24, 2022. The San Diego Fieldtrip, which was scheduled for April, has been cancelled because the Art Alive event is being held in June. Those who have already registered for the February workshop will be registered for the April workshop. Please let us know if it is not convenient for you and we will refund or register you for the May or June workshops.

On Sunday, April 24, 2022, the workshop by Ohara School and Mrs. Satsuki Palter is scheduled. Please register for our February workshop by completing the attached form and returning it to Michiyo Nakamura with your registration fee. The registration deadline is April 20, 2022. As always, you are welcome to bring a friend to any of our workshops at the non-member registration fee.

Annual KATEN

We are planning to hold a KATEN (flower exhibition) as scheduled in March. We hope that as many people as possible can join this event on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20. Currently 11 people have signed up. We are looking for 50 more participants. Non-I.I. LA members are welcome to exhibit their flowers too if they are part of an affiliated school. Please encourage your fellow students and friends to join us. Please RSVP your exhibitors spot by Saturday, March 12, 2022. Remember to wear your I.I. badge on the day of your participation so you can enter the LA county Arboretum for free.

Conclusion

Attached to this Newsletter is a six-month financial report for our Chapter in order that our members can see how we are doing financially. Also included are the sign-up forms for the KATEN and the April Workshop.

It is unfortunate that 2022 began with the Omicron strain affecting our daily lives. I hope that all of you will be vaccinated three times and have ordered your free test kits. Let's keep celebrating our friendship through flowers for a long time together with our health intact.

Let us have friendship through flowers,

Fukuyo Tanaka,

President Ikebana International Los Angeles Chapter #4
