For our December13th Zoom meeting, we will show the Ohara Demonstration video titled “Balance and Harmony in Ohara Ikebana” by Jose Salcedo,1st Term Master. Mr.Salcedo's demonstrations was performed at the 18th North & Central American Region Conference in Dallas in 2019.
José Salcedo began the study of ikebana in the Ikenobo School in February 1988. In December of that year, he began studying Ohara ikebana with Mrs. Reiko Kawamura. In 1998 he began teaching weekly Ohara classes at Mrs. Kawamura’s studio. He received his First Term Master Ohara Certificate June 2015. Mr. Salcedo began studying Urasenke (tea ceremony) with Mrs.Sakahara, and in 2009 became a Second-Degree Instructor. Mr. Salcedo has performed demonstrations at the Nisei Week Festival,the Obon Festival in Pasadena, and a yearly Hatsugama (New Year) Tea Ceremony at the Pasadena Buddhist Temple. Mr. Salcedo is an original member of the Kado Kyoju Kai, an ikebana teachers’ association in the Los Angeles area. Currently, he is a member of the newly combined group, Ikebana Teachers Association of Southern California. He has served as President of Ikebana International Los Angeles Chapter No. 4, Vice President of the Ohara Chapter, and served as the President of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Los Angeles. Born in 1960 in Los Angeles, California, he received a B.A. degree from Occidental in 1982,and an M.S.E.E. from The University of Southern California in 1984. In January, 2020 he retired from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA) in Pasadena, California.
